To Hold and To Be HeldNovember – December 2022
With the prompt of printing on a fabric garment from a thrift store, To Hold and To Be Held originated from my facination with doilies and vintage lace. From weaver to wearer, the textiles used in this project yield feminine origins, their minute details and placements often going unrecogized. Employing these textiles in a monotype print, the subtilties of the lace create an organic pattern. Remnants of the original lace are sewn along the lungs of the dress, showcasing a red flower from the monotype at its center. Interwoven hands overlap the breast of the garment, an indication of strength and compassion uplifting the heart of the wearer. As the slip dress is removed from its designation as an undergarment, its intricacies beg for a closer look. This dress in its entirety becomes an ode to the power of femininity and delicate touches of care.
